I need some help here with choosing a server OS. Requirements: Internal and External Remote Desktop connections for Worldship standalone and database client. Requirements dictated by “management” The choice I am stuck on is the Remote Desktop to the server. I know you can expand the RD on essentials to beyond the 2 users, but is there anything else I would be missing by going with Essentials, considering we don’t use Active Directory.
Back to the original question, Essentials only allows 2 Remote Desktop connections to the server for administration purposes only. Active Directory is not needed, at least as late as r2. Never tried it on without AD already in place. Essentials has “RDS Gateway” but that is only a connection broker to allow remote users to access their desktops remotely – not for RDS sessions on the server itself.
DataGuys is an IT service provider. You will need to introduce AD if you are interested in using the RDP gateway functions on the new server. Otherwise you will have user SSO issues. Get standard as the RDP Gateway feature is what you want and essentials does not have it with the user limits you specified. Other options would be a VPN connect at the firewall then RDP session to the workstation which is cheaper if you cannot afford the standard price.
Why do you need RDS? Is this for external access? Have you considered another strategy? With that few users there are generally much better and cheaper options. Save a lot of money, make things easier to maintain. With Essentials you would be looking at expandability limitations, user count limitations, No Hyper-V capabilities this is a big one for me, I would rather have any machine virtualized now, easier to backup, replace, or restore , and of course the 2 socket limit wouldn’t matter with a 25 user limit most timeas anyway , and the RAM Limit 64 GB, probably a non-issue since no hyper-V.

Two different things. Now if I was setting this up, I would have WorldShip in remote admin, on a extra workstation, with a client on required computers. No one but Admins would be using RD on servers. I would use Essentials, create a domain, and use Remote Gateway for external access for Worldship and the database client. You said you need concurrent users but now are talking about using Remote Gateway to access internal computers. If all you need is remote access to a few computers on your network, there are much cheaper options – logmein, Remote Desktop with the proper forwarding done on your router, etc.
